Overview

Background

Originally, this was the final project for a Service Design class. As the solo designer on my team, I led the development of the mobile app prototype and branding identity.

Although the final presentation only required low-fidelity prototypes, I wanted to take it further. So, during the summer, I turned this project into a zero-to-one solo app design challenge.

Original Task

During Semester

1

Design a multichannel service that includes both digital and physical aspects.

2

Increase the appeal of live events in Pittsburgh to new and existing audiences applying service design research methodologies.

Summary

Why do we have to stand in line for merch?

Arch started with a simple question: why should fans wait in line for merch, even at smaller concerts? This idea evolved into a platform that strengthens the connection between small, local artists and their fans by delivering a hassle-free concert merchandise shopping experience.

Solution

Arch as a bridge connecting artists and merch with their fans.

As the name suggests, Arch bridges the gap between local artists and their fans. Arch app offers emerging artists a platform to create and sell merchandise with increased visibility. By leveraging fan engagement through online voting, Arch aims to boost artists' revenue while fostering a stronger sense of community among fans.

Hypothesis

What if we make a merch pick-up service without long lines?

Through our preliminary research into the live concert ecosystem, we discovered that there are significant inconveniences in the current merchandise shopping experience. Given the task to address a single impactful issue in the physical world, we refined our focus and developed a service concept centered around merchandise pick-up.

03/ Research

CONSTITUENT INTERVIEWS

What are the real issues behind long lines?

Over 4 weeks, we conducted 7 interviews and I interviewed 3 fans and 1 artist, including a Pittsburgh-based rapper, Fungiflows.

Our goal was to understand the value that custom merch brings to emerging local artists, what fans seek, and how they evaluate the current shopping experience. We had a few rough ideas bouncing around and wanted to refine them by getting feedback from real artists.

research questions (artists)

As-Is How do you currently engage with fans? What methods/platforms do you use?

Difficulties What was your past experience of merch making like? What were the biggest challenges?

Idea Feedback What are your thoughts on our concept? Additional points to consider?

PAINPOINTS investigation

Diving deeper into unmet needs

Through our interviews and feedback on the initial concept, we uncovered additional underlying issues, such as demand uncertainty for artists and limited availability for fans. Fans of smaller artists also emphasized that purchasing merchandise is not just for fun, but as a way to show support. To design a service that effectively addresses these needs, we asked the following questions under three issues:

Production Risk

How can we help artists reduce the risk of over-manufacturing and manage demand uncertainty?

Queue Fatigue

Fans typically have to arrive earlier and wait in lines for merch

Availability Issue

Fans also face frustratrations when unexpected soldouts occur at the concerts.

1

Artists need risk management

Small artists often struggle to determine the right amount of merchandise to produce. For example, Fungiflows, a Pittsburgh-based rapper we interviewed, wanted to create a specific item but couldn’t, due to high production costs and uncertainty about demand.

Ensuring that each feature aligns with the business purpose

In the beginning, an Instagram story-like real-time video sharing UX was implemented, but there was no UI for fans to react or respond to the artist's messages.

Based on user testing, I decided to remove the video sharing feature and focus on a feed-like feature to increase user engagement.
